A federal judge has ordered a lawsuit over the death of an active-duty man who was a victim of sexual dysfunction in the military.
Court documents said: “The man died of a heart attack as a result of a dangerous interaction with a certain drug.”
The man died in custody after being prescribed the drug sildenafil (generic Viagra), which is similar to another popular erectile dysfunction drug, sildenafil citrate.
The lawsuit alleged that a group of former soldiers and employees abused their position to get their wives and other personal relations to be affected by the drug.
“This lawsuit is based on a theory that the Army Department of the Army, and the Department of the Navy, had improperly marketed and promoted sildenafil and other drugs,” the lawsuit said.
“The Army is aware of the drug’s risks to patients, but its drug safety review has been ongoing since 2005,” it added.
The Army, which is conducting a safety review for the drug, is seeking a return of the drug’s prescription, saying it had not received adequate warnings about the risks of sexual dysfunction.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in the Federal Court of New Jersey. The drug is sold as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The plaintiff, who is a nurse practitioner, claimed she had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction by a psychiatrist at her doctor’s office. Her husband sued her.
